Wadi Al-Sulai

Category Improve the urban landscape
Riyadh

The Wadi Al-Sulai Project in Riyadh is one of the major environmental and urban initiatives under Saudi Vision 2030. It aims to transform the valley—considered the second-largest natural flood outlet in eastern Riyadh—into an integrated green corridor that combines water drainage with recreational and sports facilities.

The project extends for a length ranging between 110 and 135 kilometers, stretching from King Fahd International Stadium in the south to Banban Park in the north. It includes preparing the valley as a natural channel for rainwater and flood drainage through the construction of canals, collection lakes, bridges, and culverts at road intersections.

In addition, the project involves developing green spaces and planting around 100,000 native trees, alongside establishing 17 investment and recreational zones that feature playgrounds, picnic areas, cafés, and maintenance centers. Dedicated pathways will be provided, including 75 kilometers of pedestrian and cycling tracks, and 35 kilometers of horse-riding trails, supported by 15 service-equipped rest stations.

The project embraces sustainability principles by using treated water for irrigation and preserving biodiversity and vegetation cover. Despite facing previous challenges such as delays and maintenance issues, relevant authorities are currently working to complete it through new partnerships. The ultimate goal is to enhance quality of life, strengthen infrastructure, and provide a sustainable and livable urban environment for Riyadh’s residents and visitors.
